How to run a fair snake draft for rec league teams
A good draft is the cheapest way to make a youth season competitive. Here is the method ProScout AI is built around: scored evaluations, a draft lottery, a snake order and a parity check before anyone leaves the room.
Why draft at all?
Leagues that let coaches build their own teams, or that assign players at random, often end up with lopsided divisions, and lopsided games are hard on kids. A draft run on real evaluation scores spreads talent across every roster, and families can see that the process was fair.
Step 1: Evaluate before you draft
A draft is only as fair as the information behind it. Run a short evaluation session with a handful of drills scored on a simple scale, and use more than one evaluator per station. Average the evaluators' scores so no single opinion decides a player's value.
- Use the same drills and the same scale for every player in an age division.
- Score what you can see: speed, catching, flag pulling or tackling form, agility, throwing for quarterbacks.
- Give coaches the scores, not just the names, before the draft.
Step 2: Set the draft order with a lottery
Draw the first-round order randomly in front of the coaches, or let software run the lottery and display it. Nobody argues with an order they watched being drawn.
Step 3: Use a snake order
In a snake (or serpentine) draft, the order reverses every round. The coach who picks first in round one picks last in round two, then first again in round three. Over a full draft this evens out the advantage of the first pick.
| Round | Team A | Team B | Team C | Team D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick 1 | Pick 2 | Pick 3 | Pick 4 |
| 2 | Pick 8 | Pick 7 | Pick 6 | Pick 5 |
| 3 | Pick 9 | Pick 10 | Pick 11 | Pick 12 |
A straight draft (the same order every round) compounds the first pick's advantage and should be avoided for youth teams.
Step 4: Decide coach's kids and siblings in advance
Every rec league has to answer two questions before draft night:
- Coach's children. The fair approach is to assign each coach's child to that coach's team at the round that matches the child's evaluation score. A top-rated coach's kid uses that coach's first-round pick.
- Siblings. If siblings must play together, the second sibling is taken in the round after the first, at a slot that matches the sibling's score.
Write these rules down and apply them the same way for every team.
Step 5: Keep the draft moving
A per-pick clock (we use a visible countdown) keeps a long draft from dragging on for hours. When the clock expires, the highest-rated available player can be auto-selected, or the coach skips and picks at the end of the round. Either works if it is announced first.
Step 6: Check parity before you finalize
When the last pick is made, total each team's evaluation scores. If one team is clearly stronger, fix it now with a coach-approved trade instead of discovering it in week three. Agree on a parity threshold before the draft and flag any team outside it.
How ProScout AI runs this
ProScout AI handles the whole sequence: evaluators score players from their phones, the app runs the draft lottery, enforces the snake order with a per-pick countdown, supports blind picks, keeps every device in sync, and shows team parity before you lock the rosters. Once teams are set, Sideline OS takes over schedules and standings, and our NFL FLAG operator page shows how the pieces fit on game day.
Frequently asked questions
How does a snake draft work in a rec league?
The draft order reverses every round. The coach with the first pick in round one picks last in round two and first again in round three, which evens out the first-pick advantage.
Is it better to draft youth teams or have coaches pick them?
A draft based on scored evaluations produces more balanced teams than coach-built rosters, and it is easier to defend to parents.
How should a league handle a coach's own child in the draft?
Assign the child to the coach's team using the pick in the round that matches the child's evaluation score, so the coach gives up equivalent value.
