Case study: how Nolensville Youth Football runs 90 teams on NOVA

Nolensville Youth Football is where every NOVA product was built and is still tested first. This is what the league looks like and what the software does each week.

The league

Nolensville Youth Football, Inc. is an independent Tennessee 501(c)(3) and an official NFL FLAG partner league in Williamson County. It has grown past 1,300 athletes on 90 teams across six age divisions. The season includes a 360-game co-ed regular season, a separate 72-game girls-only league called STARS, and a full playoff.

The league is run by volunteers. That fact shaped every product decision: if a tool needs training, a login for every parent, or a laptop on the sideline, it does not survive a real Saturday.

Why we built it

Running 90 teams across six divisions means hundreds of games, dozens of volunteer refs and coaches, and families who want to know the score, the standings and the playoff picture the moment a game ends. No off-the-shelf tool matched the operational complexity of running a league at that scale, so the people running it built one. Each product started as an answer to a specific Saturday problem: getting scores off the field, keeping standings right when three teams tie, and making playoff seeding something families can check for themselves.

What runs on NOVA now

Live scoring with NOVA Score

Referees open NOVA Score on their own phones, log in with a field number and a league PIN, and score each game with taps. Parents follow every field from one link without downloading anything. Finals flow straight into standings.

Standings, seeding and brackets with Sideline OS

Sideline OS recomputes standings from the scored-games record after every game, with a documented tiebreak order that handles three-way ties correctly. The method is public in our tiebreaker guide.

Rankings and playoff projections with NOVA Analytics

NOVA Analytics publishes power rankings, Elo ratings, clinch indicators and a seed predictor, so coaches and families can see exactly what each team needs in the final week.

Evaluations and the draft with ProScout AI

ProScout AI was built by the same team for player evaluations and the draft: evaluator scoring on phones, a draft lottery, a snake order, a per-pick clock and a parity check at the end. See how we run a fair snake draft.

What changed

Standings are calculated from the scored-games record instead of edited by hand, so a wrong score is fixed at the game and everything downstream follows. Finals reach parents from the sideline as refs post them. Seeding is calculated and published with clinch indicators, so families can see exactly what each team needs.
